About
Matea Friend is a new media artist working in Brooklyn, New York. They are interested in how technology allows us to perceive the limitations of our knowledge, while simultaneously expanding our understanding. Friend works with light, sculptural installation, and technology to queer notions of time, reality, gender, and identity. Their artistic practice involves layering virtual elements in order to immerse viewers in a distorted reality. This space is reflective of a quantum void; a space where everything and nothing exist simultaneously. Within their practice, they address Karen Barad’s question of, “what is the measure of nothingness?”. They Consider this nothingness as a gender-non-conforming space or person which contains pure, life-giving potential. Friend pursues their craft against and in challenge of, objective notions of what should (and should not) be.
Friend received a BFA from the Design Media Arts program at the University of California Los Angeles and has exhibited their work in Sanitary Tortilla Factory in Albuquerque, NM, Samsung 837 in New York, NY, Ecoartspace, Virtual, Relclaimation 454 Seation, Los Angeles, CA, The US Bank Tower, Los Angeles, CA, UCLA Botanical Gardens + ArtSci Center Los Angeles, CA, Anthony James Gallery, Los Angeles,CA, The New Wright Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, The UCLA Broad Art Center in Los Angeles, CA, Art | Sci Center Gallery in Los Angeles, CA
